Megiddo National Park

Service Description

Imagine stepping onto one of the most legendary sites in human history—Tel Megiddo, the heart of Megiddo National Park, often called the "battlefield of the ages".. In just 90 minutes, our expert-guided tour brings this multilayered ancient city to life, revealing over 20 layers of civilization spanning thousands of years. We'll start with the breathtaking panoramic views from the tel's summit, overlooking the fertile Jezreel Valley (also known as the Valley of Megiddo). You'll see Mount Tabor rising dramatically in the distance—the very place tied to the dramatic victory of the prophetess Deborah and Barak against the Canaanite forces of Sisera. In the Book of Judges (chapter 5), the "Song of Deborah" celebrates how the stars fought from heaven and the "waters of Megiddo" swept away the enemy chariots in a miraculous flood—right here in this valley below us. As we descend into the archaeology, prepare to be amazed by the Canaanite period highlights: massive temples, including one of the largest and oldest in the Near East from the Early Bronze Age (around 3000 BCE), with a huge circular altar and evidence of continuous ritual worship, including the notorious Baal, across nearly 2,000 years. These structures showcase the power of the ancient Canaanite city-state that dominated trade routes. Then, enter the First Temple period (Iron Age), when Megiddo became a key royal city in the Kingdom of Israel. Walk through Solomon's famous six-chambered gate (one of the best-preserved examples, paralleled at Hazor and Gezer), massive fortifications, administrative palaces, and the enormous water tunnel system— an engineering marvel that allowed the city to withstand sieges by channeling water from a hidden spring. No tour of Megiddo is complete without its modern history. In 1918, during World War I, British General Edmund Allenby launched what became known as the decisive Battle of Megiddo against Ottoman forces right across this same strategic plain. Using innovative tactics with cavalry, infantry, and air support, he broke through the lines—echoing ancient battles like Pharaoh Thutmose III's famous victory here over 3,400 years earlier. This clash helped reshape the Middle East and ended 400 years of Ottoman control in the region. So what are you waiing for? Bring bottled water, hats, closed walking shoes and sun screen. Inclusions: professional guide Exclusions: transport, National Park entrance charge. Looking forward to seeing you!
